Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary

The summer Garden: Spring flowers are through blooming and the forest is deepening and there is shade and shadows. Midsummer flowers take to the open as woodlands become too shaded for blossoms. From then until frost a constantly changing panorama is seen. Former Curator Martha Crone.

In early summer, from June to mid-July, after the spring glory has passed, the Woodland Garden continues to provide beauty while the Upland Garden is putting forth its first full burst of colors. More photos of each plant and additional plant information can be found at the link on the plant name. Alternate common names for plants are listed in ( ).

**Prairie Sundrops** **(Meadow Evening Primrose)** (*Oenothera pilosella*). Family: Evening Primrose. Upland Garden. This member of the Evening Primrose family has flowers open during the day.

**Blue Flag Iris** (*Iris versicolor*). Family: Iris. Wetland. Also known as the **Larger Blue Flag**. A second type (*Iris virginica*) is also found in southern parts of Minnesota.

**Yellow Flag (Pale-yellow Iris)** (*Iris pseudacorus*). Family: Iris. Wetland. The flowers are the same size as the Blue Flag (about 4 inches wide). This plant is an escapee from cultivation.

**Northern Bedstraw**. (*Galium boreale*). Family: Madder. Upland Garden. A characteristic of all Bedstraws is leaves in a whorl - in this case a whorl of 4. Found throughout Minnesota.

**Cow Parsnip** ( *Heracleum maximum*). Family: Parsley. Wetland. A very tall plant of moist areas with a large umbel of white 5-part flowers. Found throughout Minnesota.

**Foxglove Beardtongue (Talus Slope Penstemon)** (*Penstemon digitalis*). Family: Figwort. Upland Garden. The white flowers can have a purple tinge to them. Growing in extensive groups at the east end of the Upland Garden.

Tall buttercup — **Tall Buttercup** (*Ranunculus acris*).Family: Buttercup. Upland Garden. A native of Europe, now naturalized in much of Eastern Minnesota.

**True Forget-me-not** (*Myosotis scorpioides*). Family: Borage. Wetland. Found along the path through the wetland these dainty blooms peek out from under the leaves of taller plants where they bloom all summer.

**Ohio Spiderwort (Bluejacket)** (*Tradescantia ohiensis*).Family: Spiderwort. Upland Garden. A plant of open grassy areas, native to the counties around the Twin Cities.

**False Blue Indigo** (*Baptisia australis*). Family: Pea. Blooming from spring into early summer, the Upland Garden presents large groups of these colorful stems.

Wild Four O'clock — **Heartleaf Four-o'clock (Wild Four-o'clock)** (*Mirabilis nyctaginea*). Family: Four-o'clock. The flowers are in small clusters of 2 to 5. This plant growing near station 42 in the Upland Garden. Most common in the southern half of Minnesota.

Yellow Daylily — **Yellow Day Lily** (*Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus*). Family: Lily. Upland Garden, growing on the central hill near the fountain.

Wild rose — **Smooth Rose** (*Rosa blanda*); Family: Rose. Many of these shrubs bloom in the Upland Garden. Similar in flower appearance is the **Prairie Wild Rose** (*Rosa arkansana*). See the information page for distinguishing characteristics.

**Oxeye Daisy** (*Leucanthemum vulgare*). Family: Aster. Upland Garden. The common daisy found in fields, roadsides and home gardens and lawns.

Common Ninebark — **Ninebark** (*Physocarpus opulifolius*). Woodland Garden. Family: Rose. This shrub is now a quite large plant growing at the north intersection of the boardwalk paths in the wetland. It is intertwined with a Pale Dogwood so one must be careful to distinguish the proper stems.
